The Amazing
   Mr. J ON

Did you hear, we just lost WILFORD BRIMLEY? You'll remember him, of course, from his many ads for QUAKER OATS, and diabetes awareness. However, do you recall his Grandfatherly lead role in the 80s family show 'Our House,' with Shannen Doherty? The consummate loving patriarch, Brimley's 'Gus Witherspoon' (perfect name for him, eh?) became synonymous with Sunday night Family TV time. (Wonderful memories of 'Our House' here at 'Mr. J's House'). <3 The late 'Cocoon' star/actor/singer/Marine was also synonymous for his trademark cowboy hat, hence Mr. J's own version for our meeting. Although Mr. Brimley kept his famous serious visage for our picture, a sly smile surfaced on the surprised southerner, as he first saw Mr. J's silly balloon hat! "Well now! That's quite the hat you got 'dere, Son!" he quipped in his classic dialectic drawl, adding with a chuckle "Ya want me to sign 'dat Quaker Oats box?" Yes, I did (and yes he did). :) Always nice to be able to thank a hero personally, shake their hand, plus hopefully give them back a little amusement, and positivity. RIP Wilford Brimley. Bottom line for YOU: Whoever you look up to in life, hope you take the time (while you can!) to THANK them as well, in your own Magical way! As you'll remember Wilford Brimley himself always said, in his Quaker Oats ads: "It's the Right Thing to Do." www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVIewv1K3CA :) (Y) #WilfordBrimley #QuakerOats #Magic #Magician #AmazingMisterJ #BirthdayParties #BalloonHats #ItsTheRightThingToDo ... Wishing YOU a Merry Magic Canada Day!! You know, we may be socially isolating, but nothing can stop you from SINGING! Story for you: when meeting my late Canadian hero, Stompin' Tom Connors, back in 1991, it was so exciting to talk with someone who led that true troubadour life. The romance of being a travelling entertainer across our great nation, appealed greatly to the wanderlust of many young dreamers. As you can imagine, Tom's life- visiting every inch of our wonderfully vast and diverse country, no road too gravelly, no town too large or small- using your talents to spread joy, and celebrate our country...embodied the Canadian spirit for yours truly while growing up. Well, after my personal accolades to the legend, the beloved black-hatted patriot looked me right in the eye, saying in his trademark road-forged voice: "Y'know, son...someone has to carry this on, when I'm gone...it's up to all you young fellers today!" Fast forward to 2018, sharing that meeting story with Taw Connors (Stompin' Tom's talented SON), told him I felt that his Dad would have been let down by the fact that becoming a minstrel was sadly not in the cards for me. Despite my love of singing and playing music. Just the same, travelling from Newfoundland to the Yukon to perform thousands of Magic Shows, still carrying a deep abiding love for Canada, I hoped to at least honour the spirit of his Dad. Well, didn't Taw Connors put his hand on my shoulder, and say: "What you're doin' is great too...ANY kind of entertainment is good! Keep it up...my Dad would've been proud." My reply: "Thank you very much, and after your concert tonight, Mr. Connors, he definitely would've been proud of YOU too." (What a Canadian moment, eh?!) The bottom line: You don't have to be a Stompin' Tom, George Canyon, or Anne Murray to SING! Even as a full-time magician, music is still a passion...a way to express yourself...and we have much to celebrate in our great land! Corona can't stop Canada! So as we stay the blazes home, raise a glass and raise your VOICES...HIGH! Today, we are one GIANT kitchen party! Our country is still the most MAGICAL place in the world!! #CanadaDay #Magic #StompinTom #AmazingMisterJ #GeorgeCanyon #AnneMurray #KitchenParty #Magic #Music #Magician #CanadaRocks ... Need some hope? How about the amazing MAGIC that happens, when a community comes together? You may have seen this old dilapidated blank billboard over the years, as you drove alongside Highway 104 in North River (visible just past the Highway 311 overpass, on your opposite side, when you're heading East to New Glasgow/Cape Breton on the 104). History for you...it was originally put up many years ago by the (now closed) Magic Valley Theme Park. After yours truly purchased this forest land along the Trans-Canada, I had wondered for years...what should I do with this old weather-beaten sign? It was still standing there...overgrown by bush, and falling into disrepair. The tragic events of last week gave us all an answer. Walking with neighbour and friend Craig Bryson a couple days ago, we discussed making it into a sign for fellow Nova Scotians during these times, as a symbol of shared love, support, and solidarity. By coincidence, that same evening, another hard-working and community-minded new neighbour, Robbie Little, called me up...with the EXACT same idea! Thanks to Robbie and Amanda Sutherland's like-minded vision, and speedy hard work, our community came together to create what you see here...in a mere TWO DAYS! (!) ***Magic indeed***. You'll remember the old story of Pandora's Box, which when opened unleashed a deluge of evil into the world...but afterwards, there remained HOPE. Many thanks to the fellow Magicians who made this happen: The Amazing Robbie Little & Amanda Sutherland, Craig Bryson, Artists extraordinaire Matt Bailey @mbaileypaint and Jordan Babineau @babs902, plus the very generous Cameron's Paints, and Anthony Shearer of Shearer's Construction. HOPE LIVES HERE, Friends. Much love to you. www.misterj.ca #AmazingMisterJ #Magician #DavidJolly #Community #Magic #Hope #Love #NovaScotiaStrong ... See MoreSee Less
